A name the world has come to know and adore-that has been out since 2016 and people are only NOW looking at it because of the anime adaptation. Which was AMAZING-not gonna lie. But let’s be honest; no one would be talking about this series without the anime. I’d even go as far to say “not as many” would if the anime was “average.” Okay-that should be enough of me talking about how the anime is the thing that put the series over the top; let’s talk about how good this series was, shall we?! Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 10 (10 ...
I wonder what the contents of this volume were

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba” or simply “Demon Slayer,” or Kimetsu No Yaiba is a series published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, written and drawn by Koyoharu Gotouge. For that intro, I have to admit: Even I didn’t know this series existed before the anime. And when I heard people talk about it; it just felt kind of- I don’t know; “overhyped” I guess. For this reason; I didn’t watch season 1 until after it had ended. And I have to say: good story; GOD TIER ANIMATION. The story I felt was kind of……….I don’t necessarily “predictable” so much as it was “what you’d expect with a name like ‘Demon Slayer.'” Maybe “Yeah; I could see that coming,” or “Not exactly ‘unpredictable’ or ‘innovative.'” The story hits the points you’d kind of come to expect:

  • Boy’s family killed by Demon Lord- except 1 turned into a Demon. Quest Goal: Turn relative back into human and kill Demon Lord
  • Acquire power necessary to do so.
  • Kill a whole mess of Demons.
  • Meet like minded individuals
  • Kill some more demons along the way
  • Fight Demon Lord
  • Get wrecked fighting Demon Lord
  • Kill Demon Lord
  • Tell the story and pass on wisdom so it never happens again.

Now tell me: Is that not what happened? Oh man; I just said I’d stop ragging on the popular series! Now I look like some loser hater.

A Poster

The story is about Tanjiro Kamado and his little sister, Nezuko Kamado chan. Who, of course, is Best Girl in all of human history. I love and adore Nezuko and would do anything to to make sure that nothing can ever hurt her. That said; it’s not like the other girls in the series are anything to sneeze at. It’s just that Nezuko chan is adorable, tough, and kind- on all equal levels. I’ll probably gush over Nezuko chan more later, but let’s stay on topic a little.

While Tanjiro is away earning money to support his family(his father recently deceased); the “Proginator of All Demons” and Giant F*cking Baby- Muzan Kibutsuji- attacks his home and kills everyone but Nezuko- who is turned into a demon. That morning; Tanjiro buries his family in graves and goes to find help for Nezuko. But the Demon’s natural hunger starts to kicking in and Nezuko attacks. But Tanjiro gets through to her humanity and she breaks down. Enter my personal favorite character: Giyuu Tomioka. Tomioka is the Water Hashira(Pillar) of the Demon Slayer Corp- a faction dedicated to killing Muzan at all cost.

The Essence of Cool

He comes to kill Nezuko- Tanjiro wants to save her. Rather than kill her right then and there; he gives Tanjiro a fighting chance. And when he fails; Tomioko scolds Tanjiro! “You say you want to save your sister or whatever, but you just use raw emotion- not even thinking of using that Hachet you got! And now you’re begging me not to kill her?! Dead in a week, loser!” Of course; he doesn’t use that language- it’s just me interpreting what was said.

Tanjiro takes it to heart and tries again. Better results, but it still ends the same way: Giyuu’s about to kill Nezuko and there isn’t a THING Tanjiro can do to stop it. Nezuko breaks free, and demonstrates why she’s worth saving: Rather than try to eat either of them; she moves to defend Tanjiro. Tomioka, with slight faith, tells him to find his old master and former Water Hashira- Sakonji Urokodaki. Episode 1 END.

At this point; everyone’s in love with the animation. And it’s not hard to see why. Studio Ufortable- the studio who made the anime what it is- really put their A game into making this. Especially Episode 19. That episode was indeed “the sh!t.” But I experienced it through the manga first. Yeah; as I said: I didn’t watch season 1. Rather; I read all the way from chapter 1 to chapter 179, I think, and just kept reading to the latest chapter(the final chapter: 205). So I basically binged the the whole manga until I passed season 1. And by the time I finished; I just wanted to keep reading. Ended up reading the arc the movie “Mugen Train” will be based on.

I think the thing I liked the most about the series was how the characters were so-DISGUSTINGLY KIND. Tanjiro reverse robbed someone. How do you reverse rob someone?! He just wanted something to carry Nezuko in, so he asked for a basket or something. This farmer guy was willing to give him one he didn’t need anymore. TANJIRO, being the “nice guy” that he is, gives the man his money- against his will! Straight up slams it into his hands! I remember just laughing at that moment so much; I can’t even remember the contents of that episode beyond that.

Again; Tomioka’s scene with Tanjiro and Nezuko in the first episode was a scene of kindness and understanding. But not like “Oh, I’ll help you because you’re begging.” It was helping him through “tough encouragement.” He understood what was going on, but he wasn’t just going to hand Tanjiro the power he needs to do so- he had to earn it, or it wouldn’t be worth anything. Nezuko straight up goes into a 2 year comma to keep from eating people! A self induced comma to save others! The h#ll?! Tanjiro kills Demons on the daily, and feels sad about it. Speaking of: The Demons.

The Demons aren’t necessarily villains; more like “tragic antagonists.” They don’t all have a goal beyond “survive.” And that’s more just cause Muzan’s a d!ck. They’re not allowed to think for themselves. Nor are they allowed to act outside of Muzan’s will. They are to become stronger and find the mythical “Blue Spider Lilly.” They all have some kind of tragic backstory that humanizes them in some way and explains why and how they ended up in the position they are. By the end; the only character not redeemed is Muzan himself.

Muzan Kibutsuji is, at his very core-a f*cking loser, a coward, and a man-baby. He’s also very hard to please. You can tell him he’s great; “Did you think I’m so dense that I would let you leave just for telling me something I already knew?“Agree with him; “Did I ask for your opinion?” No matter what you do; you will die. He will find any reason in the world to kill you in the most brutal way possible. But then- he finds one. One Demon out of the bunch that manages to s**k his d!ck just right. Gives that demon more of his blood, and thus we have the “Mugen Train” Movie coming up.

Towards the end of the final battle; he turns into BABY and starts going crazy. He’s not trying to kill people anymore(even though he still was); he was just trying to escape. He doesn’t have any honor or anything; he just wanted to get out of the sunlight so he wouldn’t die. Which ties into his origin: He didn’t want to die.

Chapter 199 | Kimetsu no Yaiba Wikia | Fandom
Muzan(True Form)

He was an ill man, looking for a cure and coming up with nothing. Then one idiot doctor created a drug that turned him into a Demon. After a surge of power; Muzan killed the man and took his books, finding out that the Blue Spider Lilly was the only cure for his ailment. PROBLEM: He couldn’t go out into the sun light to get it, as it only blooms 2-3 times a year- during the day. Which just piles on to the ending’s big gag that probably no one picked up on: F*ck Muzan.

Seriously; the end of the series was just doing everything it could to stick it to Muzan. You start to notice throughout the fight that Tamayo’s drug is doing so much more to Muzan than it did to someone like Nezuko chan. While Nezuko chan only turned into a human, it, in order of effect:

  1. Weaken Muzan
  2. Aged Muzan 50 years per minute-making Muzan over 9000 YEARS OLD in only 3 hours.
  3. Prevents Muzan from replicating to ensure that he survives(he has 5 hearts and brains).
  4. Made his cell’s decay faster so he couldn’t regenerate instantaneously.

All of that- SPECIFICALLY made just to kill Muzan. Not to mention what the Demon Slayer corp was doing to him. You’d almost feel bad for him if he had any redeeming qualities whatsoever. But when even someone as kind and gentle as Tanjiro says “You shouldn’t be allowed to live;” you know that they have nothing left to contribute to this world.

Not As Cut And Dry As You Would Believe It To Be

Talking more about Tamayo; she would have to be just under Nezuko chan(PAUSE) in terms of how much I enjoy seeing her. She has a more “adult” charm to her, and her beauty is awe-inspiring. She’s also a skilled physcian- one hand selected by Muzan himself to help and come up with a cure for his ailment. But thanks to the first Breath-of-The-Sun user- Yoriichi Tsugikuni; Tamayo was freed from Muzan’s grasp. Along the way; she’d meet Yushiro- another man dying of an ailment. She offered to turn him into a demon. Because he was so enamoured with her beauty; he became her assistant. It’s actually pretty funny; a century or so into the future, Yushiro ends up becoming a famous artist painting images or her! Oh yeah; she dies. Which sucks.

All I want to do is look at her for the rest of my life

The Hashira are all very diverse. The one that sticks out the most to me(aside from Tomioka) is probably the Wind Hashira: the elder Shinazugawa brother. He honestly strikes me like Bakugo(to the point where I thought Bakugo’s dub voice actor, Clifford Chapin would voice him); angry at most things, enjoyed battle and winning- but also had a reason to want to torture and kill every Demon he came across. His introduction was him stabbing Nezuko chan(you would think that I’d hate his f*cking guts after that, but I really don’t), and getting into a little brawl with Tanjiro.

Another one would have to be one Mitsuri Kanroji. AT FIRST because she had nice b**bs, but then I got to learn more about her character and I grew to like her. Like I said; all the women have their own unique “charm.” One might say that, like My Hero Academia: “They’re All Best Girl.” But Nezuko chan is the best-got it?

I Will KILL Anything In This World That Can Hurt Her And Give Her Head Pats.

I noticed that the end of “Demon Slayer” was a fair bit “controversial.” The Blue Spider Lily was never even found in the main story; we found out about it’s blooming patterns in the big time skip ending. It was more like the creator was trying to meet the requirements for “Chehov’s Gun-” a dramatic principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed. The Blue Spider Lily was such a point. But it was established as Muzan’s goal, so it had to be addressed.

Another thing is that it seemed like it was pulling a “Buu saga.” Famously; the Majin Buu saga of Dragon Ball Z could have ended a few times throughout it’s run:

  1. Vegeta’s Final Explosion
  2. Super Saiyan 3 Goku(maybe)
  3. Gotenks
  4. Ultimate Gohan
  5. Vegito
  6. Fusion on the Supreme Kai’s world
  7. Super Saiyan 3 Goku(again; maybe)
  8. Spirit Bomb(Final Ending)

This arc felt like it was doing that. You had the drug Tamayo and Shinobu Kouchou made to kill Muzan, the Demon Slayer Corp fighting him, the sun coming up- ultimately being the thing that kills him. PSYCHE; he turned Tanjiro into a Demon and gave him all of his thoughts and memories! Not only that; he’s a demon that could survive in sunlight and had a Bijuu-dama-like attack! For all the middle fingers the world just gave him; MUZAN gave the final one: Tanjiro went feral and started trying to kill everyone- even Nezuko chan. It kind of felt like Tanjiro was supposed to have died there. What; with him missing an arm and dying from the amount of blood Muzan injected him with and all- No, no; let’s totally make him a Demon stronger than Muzan himself ever was.

Chapter 201 | Kimetsu no Yaiba Wikia | Fandom
Demon King Tanjiro

The final chapter was MASSIVE time skip: The World basically like our modern day one(smartphones and stuff like that). The descendants of the main cast all knew each other in some way, and we even had 2 particular characters get reincarnated.

I think I addressed everything I wanted to talk about. I mean; I liked the series. It was a fun manga while it lasted. I just think it’s a little bit “overrated.” Be honest; do you think it would be truly “amazing” without the animation backing it? Man; I’m going to get so much hate for this. Oh well; it’s the internet- can’t expect much. I hope you all have a magical day. Later!
